Bill Clinton Visits Peru CNG transit System
As part of a visit to Peru's capital city, former US President Bill Clinton had the opportunity to visit Lima's CNG transit bus system El Metropolitano. Clinton was honored with a key to the city, presented by mayor Luis Castañeda Lossio in a ceremony held at El Metropolitan's central station.
"For me, it is an honor to be in Lima and it is a great day for the city," said Clinton. "I believe that all the large cities of the world are going to have to follow Lima's example to contribute to the reduction of global warming and to improve the health of the population."
Lima has been progressive in the development of this bus project, which includes two major CNG fuelling hubs at each end of the transit corridor. Through collaboration with the project principals, PGN and Protransporte, IMW Industries has supplied 8 twin compressors and a variety of dispensing and storage equipment to be able to fuel up to 500 CNG buses by 2014.
CNG is fast becoming a leading choice for transit operators looking to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, and fuel costs. In the US, there are more than 12,000 CNG buses in use*, and it is estimated that one in four new transit buses are being ordered with CNG engines.
